Thomas Hahn (한홍택)
Dr. Hahn is currently a Professor Emeritus at UCLA and the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Composite Materials. His research interests cover a wide spectrum of composites technology ranging from design and analysis to processing and manufacturing.
Dr. Hahn’s career includes professorships at Washington University in St. Louis, 1979-86 and Penn State University, 1986-92 as well as research positions at Air Force Materials Laboratory, 1972-78, and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, 1978-79. In 1992 he joined UCLA as the Hughes Professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, and took 2 years off in 1999 to serve as an IPA/Program Manager at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. He was the Department Chair in 2002-2006 while being the Raytheon Distinguished Professor. After retirement from UCLA in 2009, he served as President of Korea Institute of Science and Technology for a year and then as a World Class University professor at Seoul National University until 2013. He was president of the American Society for Composites, 1996-67, president of the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association, 1999-00, and president of the International Committee on Composite Materials, 2005-07. Dr. Hahn holds a B.S. (64) degree in Mechanical Engineering from Seoul National University, Korea, and M.S. (68) and Ph.D. (71) degrees from Penn State University.
